Different types of attic insulation
Fiberglass batt
The most common type of insulation material is fiberglass, which is made up of hundreds of delicate glass fibers. Often, it is crafted out of recycled materials and sand. You will find this insulation in batts, which are large rolled-up sheets kept together with reflective foil.
Blown-in fiberglass
Another form of fiberglass is blown-in. The difference is that this material is loose-fill and comes as a bunch of small chunks in larger bags. When installed, the technician will use a blowing machine that evenly distributes the small chunks into the spaces in your attic.
Blown-in cellulose
Similar to the blown-in fiberglass, this material is made from many small pieces of newspaper which have been shredded. This is the most simple and cost-effective option and is often treated with boric acid because it repels rodents and insects from entering your attic.
Spray foam
Spray foam is one of the most effective insulators and it comes in two forms: open cell and closed cell. The foam provides airtight seals which can last for up to ten years. No water can penetrate it which reduces the chances of mold and mildew.
